It's no longer a surprise for me to create toothpick doll fan arts of people I am a fan of. I've made fan arts for Philippine celebrities before, but this is the first time I am making a fan art for someone who is not actually a celebrity you can watch on TV or supermodels you can see on magazine pages and covers.
Today, my friends, will all be about Youtuber Terry Song (@terrysongtv on his social media accounts), who is an online personality and a sensation. He's a half Korean and a half American. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States but he is currently residing in Seoul, South Korea where he once became an English Teacher. Due to some circumstances, he had a career change and now he is a full time Youtuber. His first videos were mostly reaction videos with his Korean and American friends. Those reaction videos were of varied categories: games, celebrities from different countries, Kpop music videos or Kpop idol groups. Until he decided to upload his vlogs of how it is like to live in Korea, how Korean streets look like, even some of his activities and adventures with his friends.
At this moment, he has around 590,000 subscribers on his Youtube channel (Terry TV) where he uploads videos almost everyday, sometimes, he would even upload two videos in one day. He would also do a livestream video on Twitch, which is another video platform for gamers. I haven't personally watched him on Twitch since I don't have an account on the said platform but he makes sure his viewers on Youtube can still watch what he's up to by uploading his livestream video on Youtube as a vlog.
Making his body was sort of easy. I have already gotten used to making toothpick dolls wearing pants and shirts and I can probably create a toothpick doll with eyes closed. Nah, just kidding. But since I would often create toothpick dolls while I'm having online classes, I would often rely on my peripheral view while creating dolls. Hashtag: Multitasking 101.
What was challenging about creating a Terry Song toothpick doll was his hat. One of the signatures of Terry Song was his black cap he wears most of the time. I have made a hat before but it was more of by luck and a lot of tweaking and freaking out. Now I had to find that luck again, and do a lot of tweaking, and freak out. I used a technique I used before on a toothpick doll, but I ended giving it up because it just wouldn't stay in place and it gives off a really awkward shape. So I tried making a crochet starter, the part where you chain and create the magic circle. I figured it might actually work, but on the first attempt, I accidentally made it too big and not resembling the cap crown at all. So I literally had to unravel it and start all over again. Then I had to make sure I give the right space for the back closure of his hat where some of Terry's bangs can be seen.
After struggling with his cap crown, I had to struggle again with the brim of his cap. Though I spent less effort on the brim than the crown, deciding on how many threads to use was a little difficult, because the width of the brim depends on how many threads I used. I did the macrame knots I usually used in making bracelets. Then I cut it on the right size, and attach it to the crown of Terry's cap. Then I just cut a little strand of yarn which had the closest color to his bangs and unravel the tiny strands a bit and glued it on the space I provided on the back closure of his cap.
Although I am not sure he'll ever come across this blog post, I hope that somehow I gave justice to his image and if his fans would see this one day, they will say it reminds them of Terry and it looks a lot like him (even though the doll doesn't have a face).
P.S. Terry's Toast Army, calm thyself.
