Figure Me Out!

FIGURE ME OUT!

VANESSA JANE C. TAROMA

I don't really have much to say about myself. If I talk about myself, I would need some time to gather my thoughts and know exactly where to start. Not that I don't know myself that well, it's because I am not the type of person to be the one doing the talking. If you really want to know, then try to figure me out. Or maybe you can just read my posts and you'll get to know me better.

But just to give you a brief background of myself, I am a Filipina and I live on the northern parts of the Philippines. I started making toothpick dolls back in 2014, most definitely out of boredom. And I'm bored most of the time. Nah, just kidding.

Most times, I can say I am quite introverted. I'm not the type to actually start a conversation, or I guess I can't keep a conversation long since I would often respond with short answers but I do try to ask follow-up questions if I can. But I'm also not the type to prefer doing things on my own nor do I prefer being by myself. I do enjoy the company of others. It's just that I am a better listener than a conversation-starter. I could listen to anybody's life story without getting bored. Most people would misunderstand me as a shy-person or a snob, sometimes I even get judged because I don't talk much and they would think I'm not in the mood to have a conversation or I am not the approachable type. As I have said, I'm a better listener than a speaker.

I have a passion about crafting. I enjoy making and creating things with my hands. I like sketching and painting even though I am not that good. I didn't go to any art school to further improve my art skills, unfortunately. But I do try to find ways to satisfy my urge to be creative. At first, I didn't know I can create crafts since even when I was at school, from primary to University years, I would often be working with art contests which involve drawing, painting, or decorating the stage for programs or shows (which mostly involve cutting letters and other stuff). We do have school projects on Art class when we were required to make crafts (especially when the year-end arrives and we would make Christmas presents), but I have always dreaded making any kind of craft like a photo frame or letter holders. I only discovered my crafting skills after University, when I made my first friendship bracelet or macrame bracelet.

In my spare time, I would often browse on Pinterest for any craft ideas. I have tried making personalized macrame bracelets, crocheted amigurumi dolls and bags, even tried the cut-out canvas art. But I have always loved creating toothpick dolls (so much that is why I would even make dolls even at work, but that is certainly a secret and my boss is not aware), that is why I created this blog to share my crafts and inspire others to create their toothpick doll friends too.

America Singer (Part 2), The Selection in Toothpick Dolls Series

Who wouldn't want to see America Singer in toothpick doll version wearing her signature blue gown she wore on her debut on the Illea Capital Report? After I created a toothpick doll version of her first ever day dress when she arrived at the palace, it inspired me to make another America Singer toothpick doll looking regal and princess-like. I might actually make more Americas in the future since she wore a bunch of outfits in the whole series and add to that her signature outfits on the book covers of The Selection, The Elite, and The One.  But apart from being the main character of the series, she's my favorite since she's got the personality I can probably relate to in some cases. She's a little introverted (I think), doesn't have a lot of friends, likes to do things on her own, may be a little stubborn, and likes to remain grounded despite all the fancy opportunities offered by living in the palace. But she also has some characteristics I look...

Lunar New Year Toothpick Dolls

It's that time of the year when people celebrate the coming of the new year under the Lunar calendar. Chinese people celebrate this event in a very colorful way. The culture and tradition is evident on the clothes they wear, the food, the dance, and the whole celebration itself. Compared to the way my family celebrates the solar new year, it's fun in its own way. Not only do the Chinese people celebrate at this time of the year. Countries such as Brunei, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea and South Korea celebrate this holiday as well, however, it is also widely celebrated here in the Philippines as there are Chinese communities living in the country although it is not exactly a declared holiday. The Lunar New Year doesn't have a fixed date unlike the other celebrated holidays in the Gregorian calendar. In South Korea, the locals celebrate the new year in a duration of three days. But this year, it falls on a weekend, making it a long ...

Princess Laura of Albania (Florante at Laura)

Every toothpick doll I make always have a story. And those stories are all rooted from my life experiences, both good and bad.  In my previous post, I talked about my dark past. About how I got bullied from an accident that nobody wanted. To lift up the heavy mood here in my blog, I decided I should at least write about a positive accident as well. And it all happened when I was in my Sophomore year in high school. I've been the typical student in school, not really standing out, but not also being left out. I would say I was the average high school girl that nobody notices, or wasn't the type who leaves a strong impression. I only talk to my friends and teachers, but other than that, I never had any interaction between those who are in the higher or lower year levels. Yes, I am that ordinary girl.  I would only stand out when there's art involved. When there were art contests at school, my classmates will automatically volunteer me. And after the conte...
