Princess Laura of Albania (Florante at Laura)

Every toothpick doll I make always have a story. And those stories are all rooted from my life experiences, both good and bad.

In my previous post, I talked about my dark past. About how I got bullied from an accident that nobody wanted. To lift up the heavy mood here in my blog, I decided I should at least write about a positive accident as well. And it all happened when I was in my Sophomore year in high school. I've been the typical student in school, not really standing out, but not also being left out. I would say I was the average high school girl that nobody notices, or wasn't the type who leaves a strong impression. I only talk to my friends and teachers, but other than that, I never had any interaction between those who are in the higher or lower year levels. Yes, I am that ordinary girl.

I would only stand out when there's art involved. When there were art contests at school, my classmates will automatically volunteer me. And after the contests were done, I'm back to that ordinary girl.

Then came a time when we needed to re-enact a certain epic story/song in our subject, Philippine Literature. It was called Florante at Laura and was a masterpiece written by one of the greatest Filipino poet, Francisco Balagtas. We had only a simple play, with only our classmates as audiences, and of course, our teacher. But despite that it was a simple play, the group I was assigned to made big efforts from detailed costumes and props and even the background music and sounds. I didn't exert much effort because like I've said, I'm not the type to stand out. Hence, they didn't need to ask me for ideas so I just went along with their plan which was fine by me.

But then, because the rest were busy with the costumes and props, they decided to make me the lead female character, Princess Laura. Perhaps because I had a slim body and had the average height, though I'm not entirely sure. I've never played any lead roles before, I played as an extra most of the time. The one with few lines and exposure. I got surprised when they suddenly blurted out I'll be the lead. Still, I didn't complain.

When the day came for the play, they gave me my princess costume and head dress which was just a flower crown. I was self-conscious during that time because the dress they gave me was a bodycon with side slits, and I've never worn any body-fitting outfit before, epecially with the slits.

Anyway, it was kind of dramatic, and you probably won't believe me with what I'm about to say. But on one scene when the male lead character was having a sword-fight with the antagonist, one of them accidentally let goes of the sword which flew right at me. I couldn't dodge it because I was sitting down. I instinctively raised my hand to somehow push it away. Good thing it wasn't sharp, otherwise I would be dead or with a scar on my hand.

But after the play, I was surprised when out teacher said I looked pretty. She said she never knew I was pretty. But now that I think of it, should I take that as a compliment or not? It sounded funny now that I remembered it. But anyway, all my classmates applauded me because they thought the same. They never saw me in a dress or having girly accessories. I mostly wore baggy T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. I even considered my T-shirt size as Large when I could fit in the Small.

I consider that as a positive accident. Because they "accidentally noticed" my physical appearance, and that I could stand out even when I'm just the average-girl-who-only-stands-out-when-there-are-art-contests.

This is my Princess Laura of Albania toothpick doll. I didn't design her with the same outfit I wore during the play simply because I would rather give her the dress befitting a princess. I made her before my Elf Mage series back when I was still trying to figure out how to make dolls in dresses and bell sleeves.

I gave her a golden tiara and golden details on her dress. Obviously, it was also the time when I was still learning the art of hairstyling. I know her hair was pretty unkempt and she had "dandruff" all over her head but that was because I put too much glue.

So much for reminding myself of that literature play. Haha!

Let me know what you think!

America Singer (Part 2), The Selection in Toothpick Dolls Series

Who wouldn't want to see America Singer in toothpick doll version wearing her signature blue gown she wore on her debut on the Illea Capital Report? After I created a toothpick doll version of her first ever day dress when she arrived at the palace, it inspired me to make another America Singer toothpick doll looking regal and princess-like. I might actually make more Americas in the future since she wore a bunch of outfits in the whole series and add to that her signature outfits on the book covers of The Selection, The Elite, and The One.  But apart from being the main character of the series, she's my favorite since she's got the personality I can probably relate to in some cases. She's a little introverted (I think), doesn't have a lot of friends, likes to do things on her own, may be a little stubborn, and likes to remain grounded despite all the fancy opportunities offered by living in the palace. But she also has some characteristics I look

Lunar New Year Toothpick Dolls

It's that time of the year when people celebrate the coming of the new year under the Lunar calendar. Chinese people celebrate this event in a very colorful way. The culture and tradition is evident on the clothes they wear, the food, the dance, and the whole celebration itself. Compared to the way my family celebrates the solar new year, it's fun in its own way. Not only do the Chinese people celebrate at this time of the year. Countries such as Brunei, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea and South Korea celebrate this holiday as well, however, it is also widely celebrated here in the Philippines as there are Chinese communities living in the country although it is not exactly a declared holiday. The Lunar New Year doesn't have a fixed date unlike the other celebrated holidays in the Gregorian calendar. In South Korea, the locals celebrate the new year in a duration of three days. But this year, it falls on a weekend, making it a long

America Singer, The Selection Series

If you came into this post then one thing is for sure: you know who America Singer is and you've also read the Selection series. I've recently come across with this series. I've been a reader of thriller genres or novels about some heroic detective solving various cases of murder and stuff. I was never a fan of the romance genre and I would always pass by the romance section on our local bookstore. Then out of the blue, I just felt like I'm getting fed up with the same genre after reading them for years. Hell, most of the books I have on my shelf are of the thriller genre. I believe it should've been a habit, but I got tired to the point of having a hard time turning the page. I was dumbfounded since, I am a lover of books and it's heart-breaking to put down a book unfinished, or having a lack of passion to read again. I felt lost. Then one day, I went to the local bookstore with my cousin to pass time. Crazy right? Most people would probabl
